Raksha Bandhan, or Rakhi is a Hindu festival that celebrates the bond between brothers and sisters. It is observed on the full moon day of Shravan month. In 2020 Raksha Bandhan is going to be celebrated on 3rd August as per Hindu calendar across the country. Raksha Bandhan is celebrated by many Hindu communities. Like all other festivals during this festival also family comes together and there’s food and fun in the menu. Shopping is also a highlight. Siblings as kids who stay together eat, wear new clothes, indulge in Rakhi shopping 2020 and make merry. Some schools and offices also observe holiday on this day.
Like every year RakshaBandhan 2020 will also see big time Rakhi shopping. Sisters shop Rakhi online and the brothers shop Rakhi gifts online. Online stores have become very popular and glitter and display many attractive offers for shoppers including wide variety of Rakhi designs, theme gifts and other such novel Rakhi gifting ideas.
Most Hindu festivals are associated with special kinds of foods and sweets. Raksha Bandhan is no exception. Every family and community makes their special sweets and there’s special menu on the platter. Ritual of Raksha Bandhan is performed in a special muhurat (time slot suggested in Hindu calendar). There are several RakhiShubhmuhurats to opt from; during the day when the ritual can be performed.
Rakhi is a sacred thread that sister ties on her brother’s wrist praying for his happiness and prosperity. In reciprocation the brother promises to stand by his sister through all times. As kids it’s a festival we all enjoy but as we grow up and go our own ways and come together for it, it becomes more or an emotional moment. If daughter of the house is married she comes to her parents place to tie Rakhi to her brother. Sometimes brother also goes to sister’s place to for Rakhi. Likewise, if brother is married, then in some communities Rakhis are tied on the wrist on brother’s wife’s wrist too. Gifts and wishes are exchanged between siblings.
It’s a day that brings joy in the life of all family members. In some families many generations celebrate RakshaBandhan under one roof, as everyone has siblings and everyone comes together. It’s a great celebration time for families.
